Q. What does the "Gomez" Michael Joly Edition sound like?
A. The "Gomez" MJE offers full-bodied, figure 8 ribbon microphone performance. The combination of a single, short-length ribbon design and powerful magnet structure provides a tailored high frequency response ideal for guitar cabinet mic'ing or classic "soft top" vocals.
Q. I've heard a lot about ribbon sag. Do I have to worry about this issue?
A. No. Each "Gomez" Michael Joly Edition mic is hand-assembled at the Cascade Microphones lab and individually tested to meet stringent performance criteria. Every mic comes with a signed "Certificate of Performance" that documents electro-mechanical build quality - including proper ribbon tension. In addition, all original ribbon motors are warranted for a period of one year.
Q. Can this mic be easily damaged?
A. No. Just use some common sense. Like all classic ribbon microphones, the "Gomez" Michael Joly Edition mic uses an extremely thin, low-mass band of very pure aluminum that responds to sound quickly and accurately. While the maximum sound pressure level the mic can handle is very high (165dB SPL), no traditional ribbon microphone can withstand the strong "chuffs" of air such as generated by a bass guitar cabinet tuning port or kick drum. In addition, swinging the microphone on a boom arm should be avoided - the resultant air pressure could be strong enough to over-flex the ribbon and cause stretching. Just avoid placing the mic were your hand can feel a "chuff" of air - and use a pop filter when close mic'ing vocal performances.
